The United Pioneer Home is a unique place. We got our start when a group of area churches united to create something new – a pioneering effort to build a home that would provide skilled nursing care for the elderly. For all practical purposes, we were the first “assisted living” facility in northwest Wisconsin, and we remain the only stand-alone, not-for-profit skilled nursing home in Polk County.

The United Pioneer Home is a special place. Deeply rooted in this tradition of loving concern for our elderly, we place resident care as our highest priority and aim to make this evident in all we do. Our professional team and many volunteers work every day to create a home described as joyful, loving, and providing excellent care.

Here is our story

In 1947, the Luck Lutheran Church congregation was thinking about how to better care for the aged. A project to build an “old-folks” home was launched and a great deal of planning and sacrifice transformed the idea into a reality. The original concept of a Lutheran Home was expanded and the project became non-sectarian, with the result being the United Pioneer Home, Inc.

The United Pioneer Home opened in June of 1953 as a not-for-profit, non-stock corporation. Built using donated labor and free will donations from local church congregations, the home was open to any aged person of the area.

In response to a need for affordable senior housing, construction of the Pioneer Apartments began in 1980 and was completed in 1981. This 20-unit complex with HUD/Section 8 rent assistance provides good-quality affordable housing for low-income elderly and handicapped elderly citizens.

In September 2011, the United Pioneer Home moved into its new facility on a five-acre campus located in a residential neighborhood in the Village of Luck. In addition to 50 skilled nursing home beds, the new building included a 16-room assisted living (CBRF) facility. Lawson Manor is home to seniors who are able to maintain an independent lifestyle with the support of trained care staff.

A nine member Board of Directors representing the 16 member churches governs the United Pioneer Home. Most of the Board members and many of our staff have had relatives living in the facility. As a non-profit organization, the United Pioneer Home does not pay dividends to owners or shareholders, and does not support a corporate structure. Rather, earnings are directed back into the business for equipment and facility upgrades or increased benefits for our staff. Every staff member is responsible to work hard and use resources wisely to deliver outstanding care to our residents, and to help produce the revenues needed to effectively operate the United Pioneer Home.
After 60 plus years, the United Pioneer Home proudly holds to the ideal of providing skilled, compassionate care for the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the elderly. This is what we are known for, and what makes us a nursing home of choice in our community. The United Pioneer Home recognizes the importance and respects the efforts of all its employees who share the task of delivering excellent care in a safe, productive, and respectful work environment for all its Residents.
